Fairphone 3 is an Easy to Repair and Ethical Midrange Phone
Fairphone, a Dutch social enterprise company that aims to develop smartphones with minimal environmental impact, has announced its third sustainable, and easy to repair smartphone.
Even though it costs more than most of the mid-range offerings with better specifications, Fairphone thinks that the environmentally-conscious wouldn’t care.
Even though the smartphone does not have impressive specifications, it all comes down to how much you care about living a sustainable life.
The company has attempted to deliver an easy to repair smartphone that has been constructed under responsibly-sourced, conflict-free conditions using recycled materials wherever possible.
Fairphone claims to have a good supply chain and better employee satisfaction, which leads to a higher price overall. The users also get rewards for returning an old Fairphone when buying a new model.
This smartphone is constructed using 7 modules, making it is easy to repair. The same approach was used in Fairphone 2 which had a 10/10 ifixit score.
As far as Fairphone 1 is concerned the company struggled to offer long term repairs for it since, after 4 years of its release, they couldn’t afford to continue producing spare parts for the phone.
For the construction of this smartphone, Fairphone has used conflict-free tin and tungsten, Fairtrade gold, and recycled copper and plastic.
As mentioned earlier, Fairphone 3 is not competitive specification-wise. It comes with a 5.7-inch display with Full HD (1080 x 2160 pixels) resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.
It is powered by a Snapdragon 632 SoC topped with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB built-in memory. On the software front, the phone runs on Android 9.0 Pie.
It features a 12 MP rear camera sensor and an 8 MP sensor on the front for selfies. The whole package is fueled by a 3000 mAh removable battery.
It is going on sale on the 3rd September but is available for pre-orders at €450 from today.
