Oppo’s Update for Reno 10x Will Boost its Digital Zoom to 60x
Oppo Reno 10x Zoom entered the market with a boom in April, mainly because it offers camera specifications comparable to Huawei P30 Pro.
Before getting into the details, you should know what optical zoom and digital zoom is. Optical zoom is a true zoom lens like the one used on a film camera, the quality doesn’t degrade when you zoom in with optical zoom. Digital zoom, on the other hand, is an image processing algorithm which cuts an image at the center and interpolates it to keep the contrast sharp. Image quality gets worse with digital zoom, the more you zoom in.
Now, coming to Oppo Reno 10x zoom, the phone initially offered 5x optical zoom, 6x and 10x hybrid zoom, and 20x digital zoom. However, the company has just announced that it is working towards rolling out updates for 60x digital zoom support. These updates will first come to Taiwan and then the rest of the world.
The Oppo Reno 10x zoom comes with a periscope lens that can go up to an equivalent of 130 mm focal length. The lens provides 5x of optical zoom and up to 10x of hybrid zoom. The 10x hybrid zoom is what gives the phone its name.
Currently, the phone has 20x digital zoom but with the 60x digital zoom update, the focal length will go up to 1560 mm. We don’t know what the image quality will be like at such extreme magnification but it won’t be pretty to look at.
For the sake of comparison, Huawei P30 Pro comes with 50x digital zoom which can go up to 1250 mm focal length.
